Dad: “Have you heard about ……?”

Me: “She left Vancouver Dad”

Dad: “How do you know?”

Me: “From her Instagram, from months ago.”

Dad: “Young people today communicate via Instagram, that’s a pity.”

Me: “Oh you really have no idea how bad it’s gotten huh?”

From this conversation he suggested I write a blog post about it, which you’re now reading. And yes it really has gotten that bad for our generation. This comes as no surprise to anybody I believe, but I will however delve a little bit in the crazy world of social media, specifically Instagram.

I told him that Instagram has become the one stop shop for everything for us today. From that one app alone, which is an entire universe in its own, there’s a multitude of happenings that are both subtle and obvious.

Let’s just start with the overt: Instagram is a business app. Individuals and companies alike use it as a means of promotion to whatever it is they offer. Along with that comes a direct, clear to get in touch with them. That much is clear.

Now on to the less discernible. It might come as a surprise to some people (though I sincerely doubt it) that Instagram is the de facto #1 dating app and it’s not even close. Forget Tinder, Hinge and company. Everything happens on Instagram, and if you don’t believe me, take a quick look at how many women on Tinder put only their Instagram handle as their bio information…

When you think about it, how could Instagram not be the best dating app? Everyone and anyone is on it. It’s a photo sharing app, meaning we all have our latest, and best if you know how to do it, pictures on there. You can comment, you can post stories about your life, and you can hit up someone you’re interested in discreetly, ANYWHERE in the WORLD (the world famous “slide in the DM’s”). Everybody on Instagram knows it goes down in the DM’s, word to Yo Gotti.

It’s of course the ultimate flex (show off) app. Everybody shows the best version of themselves on there. They show how much of a luxurious life of travel, spending, and glitz they live. They do this for validation, or attention, or fun, or so that a certain special someone sees it, or for “motivational purposes”… This is something that everyone on Instagram knows about, and at this point it’s as old and common knowledge as time itself. But we still eat it all up, day and night….

Last but not least, if it wasn’t posted on Instagram, then it didn’t happen. Today we do things solely with the intent of taking pictures & videos for “IG”, for “the gram”…It’s like if we don’t post on Instagram, then people won’t know we did it, and somehow that doesn’t validate it for us…

If you don’t post your significant other on Instagram then you’re not really official, and you have something to hide. Something to hide as in you don’t want to post her (speaking from a male perspective), because you don’t want your other “friends” to know that you have a girlfriend.

On the other hand if you were indeed posting her and suddenly you don’t, then that means the relationship is over…Even if you are still together and you post three to four pictures in a row without your boo, people will start asking questions or better yet assuming things.

There’s a lot more that can be said about the world of Instagram, but it’s not really worth it honestly. What I will say is that it’s a competition filled, cutthroat battlefield of ego’s & pride, and too much partaking in it will hurt you, mentally & physically. So handle with care.

That’s why I decide to take a much needed leave of absence from the platform, I couldn’t do the non stop fight for who can show off more. I want to see how long I can go without it, so wish me luck!
